Sometimes, just because you can. Dogs learn words and have great long term memory. They are also very perceptive when it comes to body language. They will remember routes and events on routes that humans will not even acknowledge because it wasn’t an event to the human. You may have stopped to tie your shoe, but while you were tying, their nose was cataloguing. If something exciting was catalogued, they will remember that spot forever, whereas you will forget it in a week or sooner. Their style of memory makes it easy for them to learn multiple languages. They will associate the word with your familiar tone, body language or action that you perform. In a previous job with K9’s, most of our dogs were purchased in the Czech Republic, trained in Canada and then deployed in the US. They were either German Shepherds or Malinois. They knew Czech commands as puppies, German commands as part of their traditional police training and English commands because they were trained and deployed by English speakers. In addition, they had to be certified, along with the handler, in hand signals and off lead work. After spending some time with my first partner, I taught him some Portuguese commands, just for fun. The next time I recertified, I inadvertently used some of these commands. The trainer testing us was impressed. My partner executed exactly what was required, so it didn’t make a difference what language was used. When you work with a partner long enough, often commands do not need to be given and will sometimes only be used for the benefit of the humans you need to interact with, negatively or positively, in the course of duty.
Dogs are perceptive, loyal, relatively easy to train, strong enough and large enough to perform functions that may be required of them (stopping someone from accidentally walking into an empty elevator shaft, blocking them from walking in front of a vehicle or other dangerous thing, etc,) a recognizable option (and more likely to be believed- people will doubt your guide duck, but not your guide dog,) have less “problems,” (cats do their own things, rabbits get scared easily, birds, in general, are pretty dumb, small animals may not be able to perform some tasks, etc,) and are generally less expensive. Plus, dogs are awesome. U are familiarised with this in a army for instance.Colleague of mine served in soviet army and advice was if possible to kick charging dog right into a chest.Famous russian special forces(Specnatz) teaches you in their own close hand to hand combat style “systema” as well what to do if you attacked by canine.
My first dog ate a pump tube of Colgate Children’s Toothpaste that had a bubble gum flavor to it. He climbed up onto my vanity and took it, tore apart the plastic tubing and ate the toothpaste! Another of my dogs, a Pembroke Welsh Corgi, got into our Utility Room where we stored food and ate an entire bag of raw potatoes! If your dog is an outdoor only dog, it is probably lonely and the neighbor feels compassion for it.I have tossed treats and chew toys over fences for dogs like these, and stayed a while to visit. They greatly appreciate the company. If your dog is an outdoor only dog, please let it spend at least half its time indoors while you are at home. No dog deserves to be isolated. Dogs are pack animals. It wants to be near you. It loves you. It really depends on the amount of garlic that your dog has consumed. Garlic isn’t deadly to dogs but isn’t very suitable for their digestive system. if your dog has a little more than they can handle your dog may have diarrhea or vomiting for a day or two but nothing too bad.I know a lot of people that have said garlic is deadly to dogs and all that but they can take about a clove without getting hurt. It isn’t recommended but it isn’t something that can kill your dog. Sometimes I feed my dog leftovers such as pasta with garlic basil pesto, she takes that down fine and hasn’t had any problems in the 7 years that I’ve had her. So it wouldn’t hurt just having the tiniest bit but definitely don’t overdo it.
