For Enny—who counts Lauryn Hill, Nas, and the U.K. genre of grime as her inspirations—music has always been a personal passion. She says she started taking it more seriously in 2018, when she began releasing freestyles on YouTube. “I began getting traction online and realized people were actually interested.” Soon after, she met her mentor, the legendary U.K. rapper Ty, who recently passed away due to COVID-19. “He put me on stage very early on in 2019 at the Jazz Café in Camden,” she recalls. “That was a really crazy experience for me. From there, I realized I could really do music.”Her most important confidence lesson of all? “I read a lot of affirmations,” she says. “I know it sounds corny. But I feel like you just have to speak positive things into yourself, and that’s where it starts. Ev
While at home during the pandemic, Enny continues to practice the self-love she expresses via her music, especially while she’s working hard on her debut EP, which she’s aiming to drop mid-2021. “When I start getting stressed, I like to reset my surroundings,” she says. “I’ll flip things in my room and try and get things in order, light candles and incense, or I’ll do some boxing. I love me some boxing!” As for her beauty regimen? Cantu conditioners do the trick to keep her hair healthy, while she turns to Kiehl’s products as a skin-care staple. “I grew up with really bad acne,” Enny says. “Then I learned the importance of skin care and drinking water,” she adds with a laugh. “Water is very vital in clearing the skin and giving a radiant look.”
By now, you’ve likely heard Nigerian-British rapper Enny’s hit single, “Peng Black Girls.” The song tackles issues Black women face—from cultural appropriation to lack of media representation—and celebrates finding self-confidence through it all with lyrics like, “There’s peng Black girls in my area code / Dark skin, light skin, medium tone / Permed tings, braids, got minis afros / Thick lips, got hips some of us don’t / Big nose contour, some of us won’t,” over a mesmerizing beat. The singer Amia Brave accompanies Enny on the track, and in December she released a remix with Jorja Smith. The London-based rapper, 26, never expected the response she received to her song. “I wrote it in 2018, and it was just like some things I’d been feeling. I didn’t think anything of it,” she remembers. “Peng is a slang term we used a lot growing up—it means something nice or appealing. In the song, I was trying to recreate that feeling I had of being a young Black girl in London.”
