Employee retention is not the employee’s Eevee Halloween Pokemon shirt. People leave for a number of reasons, and being well treated isn’t always enough. That is just how it is, deal with it instead of blaming your employees. I hope you aren’t telling your other employees of your opinion, it will get them wondering what you really think of them and they may start planning to leave too. Not the outcome you want. And, having the attitude of “I pay you, just do your job” isn’t helpful. Are you helping your employees so much to help them, or to help you retain them? As you have seen, this simply doesn’t work all the time, and getting mad at your employees is like getting mad at them for the dirty dishes in your sink.

Not their problem. Don’t “give” Eevee Halloween Pokemon shirt your employees something and expect that to “buy” their loyalty. You can hope that they stay, but last I looked they are free to leave, and getting mad when they leave despite how “nice” you are to them honestly shows you may not actually care so much as to be doing a lot to try and retain them. Believe me, they get how transactional this is. And, it being a transaction isn’t bad, what is bad is trying to label it (only) as caring and helping only to be found out when you bitterly complain when someone leaves despite “all you did” for them.
